I finally got around to watching a Marie Forleo video that was in my "Watch Later" playlist. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. It made mention of that feeling of working hard and not getting anywhere, something that I am painfully aware of. They said it wasn't a matter of working harder, but rather realigning direction slightly. At first, I took it literally, as in, working hard but on the wrong specific things. Which would be accurate, nonetheless. My risk adverse traits certainly hold me back.
But rather, that the realignment was an emotional thing. That rewriting the script inside of my head is the difference between stewing in the disappointment, or taking the energy from it and turning it into something useful instead.
Making art so publicly hasn't quite made up for having this hermit lifestyle. I spend a lot of time making stuff, making videos of that stuff, and going to work to make the money that I don't get for making stuff. I've missed out on so much! I need to expand on an old resolution I once had about leaving the house every once in a while. But not just art stuff this time.
This week, I'm exploring the fun stuff. Trying out new materials maybe, new sketchbooks, new subject matter perhaps. John's had some extra days off this week, though it's much harder to find interesting places to go during the rainy months! On a whim, we stepped off the Skytrain and explored a bit of Central Park. No one told us that the wildlife was so friendly there! It spooked me, every time a chubby squirrel tumbled in my direction.
Now that I'm cooped up back at home, a sampler pack of watercolour papers (from Legion Paper) has arrived! My goodness, I wasn't expecting quite this fancy of a wrap. This is quite the fat stack of papers, beautifully labeled and presented in a fancy velcroed paper folder. It will be very difficult to disturb these with whatever "test" I might come up for them. It's an awful lot for say, a short video. I'm actually a little worried that I will have nothing to say about them! That I will try every one of these, including the widely-adored Arches, and spot no real difference or preference between them. There's really only one way to find out.
Hello! I'm Melissa, and here you'll find some behind-the-scenes footage of an artful life. Won't you join me?
